About Fiona Ma
Fiona Ma was re-elected in 2008 to represent the people of California’s 12th Assembly District. The district includes San Francisco, Daly City, Colma and Broadmoor.
As a former San Francisco Supervisor, Assemblywoman Ma hit the ground running in Sacramento. The Speaker appointed Assemblywoman Ma as Assembly Majority Whip, where she is responsible for ensuring the passage of crucial legislation to improve public education, transportation, expand healthcare access and protect our environment.
At the start of her first term, Assemblywoman Ma convened the bi-cameral and bi-partisan high speed rail caucus. The caucus worked to protect and restore budget funding for the High Speed Rail Authority and fought to keep the High Speed Rail bond on the November 2008 ballot.
In April, 2007 Assemblywoman Ma was on board the world record breaking high speed train on rail. The V150, a French TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) train, reached a top speed of 357.2 mph shattering the record of 320.2 mph set in 1990. As the only American aboard the record setting train, Assemblywoman Ma brought high speed trains to the forefront of California transportation policy.
In the summer of 2007, Assemblywoman Ma led the effort to maintain $21 million in funding for the High Speed Rail Authority after the Governor proposed to slash its budget to less than $2 million.
In 2008, Assemblywoman Ma joint-authored AB 3034, the Safe Reliable, High-Speed Train Bond Act for the 21st Century—Prop 1-A on the November 2008 ballot. Assemblywoman Ma was a leader in the campaign to pass Prop 1-A, which was approved with 53% of the vote.
Today, Assemblywoman Ma continues to work on the effort to capture federal funding for the project and ensure that the High Speed Rail Authority has the tools and funding to have the system’s first segment from San Francisco to Los Angeles completely up and running by 2018.
